Joh 16:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, because they believe not on me; Jesus tells us that we sin by not believe in Him. Sin is therefore unbelief. You therefore become a sinner and have a sinful nature when you do not believe in Christ. As a result you live according to the sinful nature and-:
1Jn 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Gal 5:19 KJVR) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
The Good News Bible says,
What human nature does is quite plain. It shows itself in immoral, filthy, and indecent actions;
So we conclude that when you commit adultery, fornication or you are immoral, you are doing what human nature does. Your fallen nature, because of unbelief makes you to do those things that the human nature does.
Can a Christian sin?
(1Jn 1:8 GNB) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us.
9 But if we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make a liar out of God, and his word is not in us.
Surely a Christian can sin, but we need to accept that we sinned, confess our sin and forsake it.
(Psa 32:5 KJVR) I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
(Pro 28:13 GNB) You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up; then God will show mercy to you.
(1Jn 2:1 AMP) MY LITTLE children, I write you these things so that you may not violate God's law and sin. But if anyone should sin, we have an Advocate (One Who will intercede for us) with the Father--[it is] Jesus Christ [the all] righteous [upright, just, Who conforms to the Father's will in every purpose, thought, and action].
We can therefore conclude that-:
· Unbelief is the primary sin
· What you do (i.e adultery, fornication, stealing etc. is a secondary sin.
· You do not become a sinner because you sin, but you sin because you are a sinner. In the same manner you do not become a Christian by doing what is right, but you do what is right because you are a Christian.
Rom 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
· Christianity has nothing to do with what you did or didn’t do, but everything to do with what He did.
1. Does this mean we can simply commit sin because we have an Advocate and we can always confess and be forgiven?
2. What does sin do in our lives?
3. How can I overcome sin?
